My Philosophy of Teaching Mathematics at the Elementary Grades.
Mathematics is a very important element to everyday life whether you’re a student or not. Students need to be able to apply math to the world around them. They also learn better when you can connect subjects to real life. This way students will be able to see how important learning math actually is rather then just doing them on paper. Teachers should portray that math can be fun and exciting. Math doesn’t have to be pages of drills about facts and numbers but can be as fun as a game that they can play.
Math should be taught by using different learning styles. Some of the styles could be cooperative learning and differentiation. Students learn in many ways and math should be taught the way a student can learn best. As a math teacher, we should be able to match our lessons to each student in the classroom so the student can proceed at a level that is best for them. Students should also be taught with manipulatives because they are helpful for children to visualize the concepts that they are talking about. One way that teachers can use manipulatives is in a fraction lesson. Having fraction circle, help students imprint the value of the pieces this can help any visual learners because they can see what the fraction actually means. Cooperative learning allows the students to work in small groups. When putting the students in small groups, students on different learning levels can help each other out.
Technology and computers might be important part of the curriculum. There are so many resources and websites, demos, geogebra, mathematica, that can be used for students to actually be able to see what is actually happening, like shapes and 3D sets. Technology and computers allow students to visual representations that is hard for teachers to show with paper and a pen. Computers make it easier for students to understand concepts. Computers are very motivational for students because they are colorful and exciting for the students. Using technology and computers is a way to get students more excited about mathematics. Technology and computers provide efficient ways and a variety of learning.
A math teacher needs to be very engaging. Capturing a student’s attention is essential for comprehension. A teacher needs to be confident, comfortable and enthusiastic about the topic they are teaching. If the teacher acts this way, the students will also feel this way in the topic they are learning. As educators, it is important to portray positive energy through everything that it taught whether it is a strong topic for you or not so the students can feel good about everything that they are learning.
